The Five Element theory of East Asian medicine explains the movement and creation of all natural phenomena through interwoven cycles of generation and control. In the creative or generative cycle, each Element depends upon the preceding one to flourish and grow and in turn generate the next Element. Like the parent who provides for the child, Water provides nourishment for Wood, which in turn gives rise to Fire by providing fuel to burn. Fire generates ash that becomes the Earth, and Earth compresses and refines the material on its surface to form Metal. Generation of each Element is cyclical – in order to strengthen any single Element, that Element must give in order to keep the cycle moving and get back what it needs from the system in turn.
This elegant theory can be applied to any process in nature, including society as a whole. We at Three Mountain Eastern Medical Group believe that we must give in order to get.
